Brazen thieves are taking advantage of any opportunity they see to steal cars prompting police to repeat their warning to the public to be vigilant at all times.
Toowoomba Detective Senior Sergeant Paul McCusker said a silver 2016 VW Tiguan wagon (QLD rego MAC 20) was stolen from a Prince Henry Heights home after the victim left the engine running while she was putting mail in the mailbox on Tuesday.
“A vehicle was approached from behind by another vehicle that police know to be stolen,” he said.
“Offenders went from that car to the woman’s vehicle and drove off.
“Although we may be exiting our car for a short period of time, we are providing an opportunity for thieves to steal the vehicle.”
Later that day at a Rangeville address a victim arrived home and was taking a young child upstairs leaving her handbag and vehicle keys in an open garage.
Sgt McCusker said thieves entered the garage, took the keys and fled in the 2020 BMW X3 wagon (Qld rego 408 AN6).
“Again it is a reminder that if you are leaving your vehicle unsecured with the key accessible you are welcoming it to be stolen and cause unknown heart ache to yourself and other members of the community,” he said.
Police are searching for both vehicles and have urged the public to report any sightings.
Sgt McCusker added that they may be bearing false licence plates.
“Officers from the property crime team will continue to disturb the criminal element in Toowoomba.”
