A man is recovering after surgery to treat a serious abdominal wound inflicted at the Oakey Beef Exports.

The Chronicle understands the man was cleaning the bolt gun used to kill cattle when it discharged into his abdomen, about 3pm on Tuesday.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the man was treated for serious injuries before being flown to the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

He was conscious and talking when the paramedics arrived and is expected to make a full recovery.

NH Foods Australia – the company that runs the meat works – confirmed the incident and said it would co-operate fully with an ongoing Work Safety investigation.

A company spokesman said their thoughts are with the man and his family and that they were unable to make further comments as the matter is under investigation.
