A young man accused of abducting a woman from outside a Toowoomba nightclub has had his bid for freedom stalled after the Magistrate could not secure an interpreter.

Police allege 24-year-old Nasir Ilyas Kicho - who speaks limited English and needed a Kurdish-Kurmanji interpreter - met a 36-year-old woman outside a CBD venue on Ruthven St and offered to give her a lift home about 11.15pm on Saturday.

The woman got into Mr Kicho’s car, but he allegedly drove her to an alternative address in Newtown, rather than the woman’s home.

Police allege that when the pair arrived, he took her into a structure at the address.

The woman notified a friend, who contacted police and officers arrived at the address a short time later and took the man into custody.

He was charged with one count each of sexual assault and deprivation of liberty and spent two nights in custody ahead of a brief appearance in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Monday.

Duty lawyer Alysha Jacobsen said while she was able to source an interpreter for an initial conference in the watch house, that call was terminated because the parties could not hear each other.

When it came time for the matter to be heard in the Magistrates Court, a Kurdish-Kurmanji interpreter was no longer available.

“It would appear that I am going to remand you in custody until tomorrow,” magistrate Kay Ryan said.

“You will have to remain in the watch house until tomorrow.”

Speaking via video link from the watch house, Mr Kicho said he needed to be released so he could drive his brother to work.

The plea was rejected quickly.

“They are very serious offences,” Ms Ryan said.

“A lawyer is going to try and get you out on bail, but we need to have an interpreter.

“I want you to be able to understand everything.”
