Morgan Western Troy Mundy, Peter Mark Gibbs charged with multiple offences following six-hour Newtown siege

After two men faced court on charges that predate a six-hour siege with police, the pair have now been charged with multiple offences, including serious weapons charges.

The two alleged gunmen who held police at bay during a tense six-hour siege in Newtown have faced the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on charges that predate Wednesday’s incident.

Peter Mark Gibbs, 35 is charged with six counts of entering a premises or dwelling, two counts of receiving tainted property, two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count each of stealing and unlicenced driving.

Morgan Western Troy Mundy, 44, is charged with seven counts of fraud, five counts of entering a premises and committing an indictable offence, two counts of possessing tainted property and one each count of possessing suspected tainted property (jewellery) and failure to appear in accordance with an undertaking.

Solicitor Phil Stainton, for Mr Gibbs, told the court he had been advised that there were further charges against his client pending.

“Perhaps in the circumstances the matter could be adjourned to 9am tomorrow,” Mr Stainton said.

Solicitor Claire Graham, for Mr Mundy, told the court there were to be further charges against her client and similarly asked that his case be adjourned to Friday.

Magistrate Kay Philipson therefore remanded both men in custody and adjourned their respective matters to the same court on Friday.

Following their court appearance, police charged Mr Mundy with one count each of possess firearm, possess explosives, dangerous conduct with a weapon, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, possess dangerous drugs, possess utensil, receiving tainted property and wilful damage in relation to the emergency declaration.

Mr Gibbs has now been charged with four counts of burglary, two counts of enter premise, two counts of tainted property, two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, one count of stealing and one count of unlicensed driving in relation to other offences.

The pair were arrested after a stand-off that started when police went to an apartment in Park Street to serve a warrant on one of the men about 10.45am on Wednesday.

It is alleged one of the men brandished a revolver and threatened police before firing up to four rounds within the apartment about midday.

Police responded by firing a warning shot, locking down Tor Street, Park Street and Dalmany Street and calling in heavily armed specialist officers from Brisbane.

Up to five family women who were in the apartment at the time were allowed to leave the building.

No one was hurt.

At about 6pm the men surrendered to police and were held in custody overnight.

Police are yet to charge the men with specific offences related to the siege.

Investigations into the incident are underway, including investigations by the Ethical Standards Command with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission.
