A man has faced court after police found more than a dozen vials of steroids and illegal items in a raid on his address.

Andrew James McDonald, 35, fronted Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Friday charged with three offences relating to possession of a dangerous drug, illegal medicines and restricted items.

He pleaded guilty to all three offences.

Police prosecutor Rohan Brewster-Webb told the court police located 14 vials of testosterone amounting 64.9 grams, four cans of pepper spray and a blister pack of Viagra while conducting a search of McDonald’s residence.

Mr Brewster-Webb said McDonald told police the testosterone vials were purchased a considerable time ago and the pepper spray was for his own protection.

Representing McDonald, defence lawyer Nathan Bouchier said his client had purchased the steroids in an effort to cure his anxiety and depression.

“He had been told that sometimes low levels of testosterone can be related to (anxiety and depression),” Mr Bouchier said.

“He was told by the doctor there is a proper way to do this and he decided to see how he would go short circuiting the process.”

Mr Bouchier pointed to the fact that 13 of the 14 vials were left unopened, stating his client had trialled the substance but decided it wasn’t for him.

“He found that it was not the way to go and desisted from that (behaviour) and instructs instead he has taken the doctor’s advice,” he said.

Acting magistrate Lisa O’Neill advised Mr McDonald he was fortunate no serious medical consequence arose from his use of steroids.

“When you order these sorts of things you don’t know what you’re getting, sometimes other drugs are involved, the consequences could have been severe,” she said.

“You did get medical advice, you then took matters into your own hands.”

Mr McDonald was fined $1500, no conviction was recorded.

All items were forfeited to the state.
