Man jailed, banned from driving for six years, by Toowoomba Magistrate

A man will be on parole for five months and banned for driving for up to six years after he pleaded guilty to a string of drug offences.

A MAN with an “terrible” record of drink and drugged driving will be off the road for up to six years after he pleaded guilty to more than 20 offences yesterday.

Brodie Wayne Roxby Young appeared in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court yesterday to answer for a raft of offences that date from April to October 2020.

The 31-year-old man’s offending occurred while he was subject to both a suspended jail sentence and a probation order.

Of Young’s 20 offences five were for drug or drink driving.

The court heard Young was in the throes of ice addiction at the time, that started after a mate suggested he use the drug to manage depression resulting from a workplace injury in 2017.

For the defence, solicitor Brad Skuse said his client was an upstanding member of society, with a good work record, until he started using ice.

His offending included buying an illegal firearm with the intention of pursue work as a roo shooter, possession of two knives and possession of several small amounts of ice.

“On his 30th birthday, he really had to take stock of himself,” Mr Skuse said.

“He has turned himself around from continuing on that path.”

In sentencing, Magistrate Damian Carroll said there was no option other than to jail, because of a “lack of respect” Young had shown while on a suspended jail sentence and a supervision order.

“You have a terrible record in relation to drinking and driving, or using drugs while driving,” he said.

Mr Carroll ordered a head sentence of five months in jail, with immediate parole, along with a $1000 fine.

Young was disqualified from holding a driver’s license for six years.
