A teenager has faced court after he was charged over the alleged assault of a 75-year-old man at Grand Central Shopping Centre in Toowoomba after he was tracked down in an allegedly stolen car.

Darling Downs detectives charged Wilsonton 18-year-old Isaac Zane Cubby with grievous bodily harm following his arrest on Monday night.

It is alleged a 75-year-old North Toowoomba man was waiting at a taxi-rank on Margaret Street at around 5pm on Monday, February 6 when he was pushed from behind by Mr Cubby, causing him to fall to the ground before his backpack was stolen.

The man was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries.

Polair and local police tracked an alleged stolen vehicle with the car intercepted on Hermitage Rd at around 8.40pm following an earlier successful sting by a tyre deflation device.

The two occupants fled on foot but were quickly taken into custody hiding in bushland by a dog squad.

The young Wilsonton man has been charged with one count each of grievous bodily harm, robbery using personal violence, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and enter dwelling and commit.

He was denied police bail and appeared in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Tuesday, February 7.

Mr Cubby remained in the watch house when his matters were mentioned with duty lawyer Ryan McCullough, of MacDonald Law, telling the court his client was not required in court.

Mr McCullough said there would be no application for bail on his client’s behalf at this point and asked for an adjournment so police could put together a full brief of evidence on the allegations against Mr Cubby.

Magistrate Clare Kelly ordered the brief of evidence be disclosed to the defence by March 14 and adjourned the case for mention back in the same court on March 28 with Cubby remanded in custody.

A 16-year-old local boy was also denied police bail to appear in the Toowoomba Childrens Court on a charge of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The vehicle had allegedly been stolen from a Dalby home overnight February 3-4.

A witness told The Chronicle following the alleged assault “there was blood everywhere” near the scene of the incident.

A Toowoomba man working at a nearby business said the first moment he realised something was wrong was when three ambulances sped down the street.

He said he saw the elderly man in the gutter before paramedics covered the public’s view with a stretcher.

The born-and-raised Toowoomba local said afternoon traffic slowed to a halt along the busy thoroughfare as drivers slowed to look.

Another witness at the scene said they saw the man lying in the gutter before emergency services arrived.

Officers cordoned off the area with police tape to establish a crime scene and patrolled the area as they searched for the person as well as the vehicle involved in the incident.

Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics were also on scene and reported the man sustained severe head injuries, suffered a medical episode and was transported to Toowoomba Hospital, where police will attempt to obtain further information from him.

It is understood the alleged victim remains in hospital in a critical condition.

As investigations continued, police urged any person who may have witnessed the alleged assault or who may have relevant CCTV or dashcam footage to contact them.
