A father who sent Snapchat messages outlining the depraved fantasies he had about his eight-year-old daughter has been handed a jail sentence.
Toowoomba District Court was told the man sent the messages to a woman late at night while drunk on August 13, 2023.
She was disgusted by the content, which included detailed sex acts, and reported the matter to police the next day.
Crown prosecutor Emily Coley told the court that police raided the man’s Toowoomba home on August 15 and seized his phone.
It not only contained messages but also two separate folders containing 56 images of child exploitation material.
“There were some particular graphic images,” Ms Coley said.
“The defendant told police he used to have a sexual interest in child pornography. That he ‘used to have an interest’ is not consistent with the fictitious story he told this woman.”
Police also interviewed the man’s daughter who made no disclosures about abuse.
Further forensic examination of the man’s phone revealed he had been in contact with a Maryborough man about sourcing more images.
He was charged with one count each of possessing, producing and distributing child exploitation material – charges to which he pleaded guilty to on Friday.
Acting in his defence, barrister Jessica Goldie told the court the man had a traumatic upbringing that including being the victim of sexual assault as teenager and bullying at school because of his weight.
She added that he was remorseful, embarrassed and co-operated with police
“He has issues with paranoia and delusions … and a provisional diagnosis of schizophrenia,” Ms Goldie said.
The court was provided a report under the hand of a prison psychologist that said the man did not fit the criteria for pedophilia.
Judge Nathan Jarro considered the 290 days the man had served in presentence custody, noting that it was longer than what he would have otherwise been sentenced to.
However, Judge Jarro poured scorn on the man’s actions.
“It was gross, it was vile, to suggest things about your own flesh and blood is unfathomable,” he said.
“People who commit these offences deserve contempt by the community.”
The man was sentenced to 290 days in jail and released immediately.
