A Lockyer Valley man accused of chilling domestic violence crimes has been refused bail by a Toowoomba magistrate.

The man who was working at Stanbroke Premium Australian Beef on a visa, James Kopi, failed in his bid for bail before the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Friday, August 30, after spending a night in the watch-house.

The court was told the young man, who was living in Gatton, was recently convicted of domestic violence offenses, including assault, before the Gatton Magistrates Court, and allegedly committed further DV offences days after his sentence.

He was on a probation order when the alleged fresh crimes occurred, the court was told.

Police, who opposed Mr Kopi’s bail application, allege the serious and concerning behavior escalated when the woman ended the relationship, alleging he stalked the woman and broke into her new home.

Police prosecutor Rowan Brewster-Webb said that on another occasion, Mr Kopi allegedly tried to break into the woman’s bedroom through a window, where he used a knife to cut her flyscreen.

During the incident, he allegedly told the woman he would “be back” to kill her.

The court was told Mr Kopi allegedly made numerous death threats towards the woman and told her to leave town “or else” he would kill her.

“Leave Gatton, if not something will happen to you, I will keep going” a WhatsApp message allegedly read.

“I’m going to kill you,” another allegedly stated.

Mr Kopi was charged with stalking, break and enter, attempted break and enter, and using a carriage service to menace, threaten, and harass.

The charges will next be mentioned before the court on September 25. No pleas have been entered.

Mr Kopi was remanded in custody.
