A 25-year-old woman who was caught driving dangerously on the Warrego Highway and refused police directions to stop has been hit with a jail term, a huge fine and a driving disqualification of almost three years.
Jordyn Maree Skrinjar had been driving in Roma on November 10, 2022, when a police patrol had directed her to stop but she had driven on, Toowoomba Magistrates Court was told on Tuesday.
When eventually stopped by police, the then 24-year-old tried to do a runner but was soon caught by police, police prosecutor Sergeant Alister Windsor told the court.
She was found to have a glass pipe for smoking drugs on her and she had been driving unlicensed an unregistered and uninsured vehicle with two different number plates, he said.
Earlier that day, Skrinjar had been driving well over the speed limit in a 60km/h zone on the Warrego Highway outside Roma and had overtaken a truck at speed, veering onto the wrong side of the road, forcing oncoming traffic to take evasive action, he said.
Skrinjar was found to be driving with meth in her system at the time, Sergeant Windsor said.
Magistrate Clare Kelly told Skrinjar she was lucky not to have killed herself or someone else with that sort of dangerous driving.
Skrinjar pleaded guilty to 11 offences including evasion, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, obstructing police, unlicensed driving, failing to give a statutory declaration, driving an unregistered, insured vehicle and drug driving.
Ms Kelly noted Skrinjar had a lengthy criminal history but acknowledged she had endured a “very prejudicial” upbringing and that she had recently undergone drug testing which proved negative for drugs.
Skrinjar was young enough to turn her life around, she said.
Ms Kelly sentenced her to nine months in jail but ordered she be released on parole immediately, fined her the mandatory minimum of $7187.50 for evading police and disqualified her from driving for a total two years and nine months.
