A 34-year-old Avenell Heights man accused of assaulting a 79-year-old man and taking his vehicle has had his matters mentioned in Toowoomba Magistrates Court.

Jonathan Leslie Yates is accused of approaching the complainant man who was sitting in his LandCruiser about 5.30pm, May 10, and dragging the man from the vehicle.

Police claim Mr Yates then assaulted the senior citizen, allegedly leaving him with head injuries, and driving off in the vehicle.

The stolen LandCruiser was sighted at a number of locations across the Darling Downs and southwest Queensland after the alleged carjacking, including at Roma, Warwick, Dalby and Jondaryan.

Mr Yates was arrested late the next afternoon at Kogan after he had allegedly led police on a cross country chase that ended when he ran out of fuel.

Mr Yates has not as yet been required to plead to charges of armed robbery, stealing, evasion and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He has been held in custody since his arrest and was not in court on Friday when his matters were mentioned.

His solicitor Chelsea Saldumbide, of McConnell Saldumbide Lawyers, told the court she had received the police brief of evidence and asked for an adjournment to go through the brief with her client and take instructions.

Magistrate Mark Howden therefore remanded Mr Yates in custody and adjourned all matters for mention in the same court on July 21.
