When it comes to job interviews, honesty is usually the best policy, but for one Toowoomba man telling the truth about his licence to a potential employer saw him disqualified from driving for almost three years.

Jesse Jay Bays drove to a job interview at Toowoomba business Absolute Batteries about 11am on January 5 this year, during which he said he admitted he had lost his licence as a result of a demerit point suspension, the court was told.

Sergeant Natalie Bugden said he was seen driving to and from the job interview, which was reported to Policelink.

On January 24, police spoke to Bays but after initially denying driving he admitted to driving to the interview.

Jesse Jay Bays was disqualified from holding a driver's licence for two years and 11 months after pleading guilty to two charges of driving without a licence and mid-range drink driving.

The court was told that on November 9 at 1.50am, police attended a disturbance at Newtown where witnesses stated that Bays had driven to the address while drunk.

About 2am, police spoke to Bays at his Ruthven Street address and he claimed a friend had driven him to the property and had just left via taxi, but investigations revealed the taxi company had not received any jobs at the address.

Sergeant Bugden said Bays returned a positive sample of 0.144, and checks of his licence revealed he had been suspended from June 30, 2021 to December 29, 2021.

In court on Tuesday Bays pleaded guilty to two charges of driving without a licence (demerit points suspended) and mid-range drink driving.

When magistrate Howard Osborne asked Bays about the offences, he said “what’s done is done”.

Bays was convicted, fined $1300 and disqualified from driving for two years and 11 months.
