Drink driving: A guide to safe drinking

A Toowoomba man’s 37-year military career has been ended after he was charged with drink driving.

Illya Pierre Wilson faced Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle while over the middle alcohol limit.

The court was told the 55-year-old was stopped by police on the Warrego Highway at Bowenville about 12.05pm on April 22 this year.

After a positive roadside reading Wilson was taken to Dalby police station, where a breath analysis returned a reading of 0.124, police prosecutor Alister Windsor said.

In court, Wilson’s solicitor Brad Skuse said his client was now going through the discharge procedure from the military after 37 years of “very good service to his country”.

Magistrate Kay Philipson said Wilson was in court because the community was “sick of people getting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle while intoxicated” but acknowledged the incident happened while he was dealing with the grief of the loss of his father.

Wilson was disqualified from driving for three months and fined his $450. No conviction was recorded.
