Former doctor Joseph Lee Smith has 137 child sex charges adjourned in Toowoomba court

The 48-year-old was arrested at his Toowoomba home with police claiming he befriended an underage boy in Victoria via Instagram and allegedly had the boy send him images of him dancing naked.

An accused paedophile former doctor charged with 137 child sex and grooming matters, has had his matters mentioned before the Toowoomba Magistrates Court.

Joseph Lee Smith, who is currently held in custody, has been charged with 41 counts of grooming a child under 16, eight counts of using the internet to procure a child under 16, aggravated supply of a drug to minor and rape, was not required to be in court for the brief mention of his matters on Wednesday.

Smith, 48, was arrested at his Toowoomba home with police claiming he befriended an underage boy in Victoria via Instagram and allegedly had the boy send him images of him dancing naked.

He also faces 56 charges of failing to comply with reporting obligations, resulting from prior convictions.

He has not been required to enter any pleas to the charges.

His solicitor Ryan McCullough, of MacDonald Law, told the court on Wednesday that barrister Steve Kissick had been briefed in the matter but they needed to speak with their client in the prison which was proving difficult at the moment due to Covid restrictions.

Magistrate Kay Philipson remanded Smith in custody and adjourned the case for mention back in the same court on February 16.
