An Oakey tradesman caught trafficking street level amounts of cannabis to fund his own drug use, was sentenced at the Toowoomba District Court on November 28.

The court was told full-time plasterer Dyllen James White had no criminal history and began selling the illegal drug to fund his own cannabis habit.

Crown prosecutor Nicole Friedewald said over a nine month period in 2021-2022, the now 27-year-old organised more than 100 drug deals, however only 48 were carried out.

Ms Friedewald said White had 24 customers, 12 of which were regulars and some were trusted enough by White to attend his home.

However, she said White believed his neighbours were becoming suspicious and changed tact.

The court was told White usually bought two ounces of cannabis a week to offload and earnt as little as $150 a week from the venture.

White also sold 3.5g of MDMA for $450.

Ms Friedewald said there was evidence White was trying to grow and advertise his business, so he could reduce his prices, and on one occasion allegedly threatened violence over a drug debt.

White’s illegal cannabis business came to light after police officers seized his phone during a search warrant of his property.

The court was told White was “unquestionably ashamed” of his actions and determined to get a handle on his addiction, which was an “underlining issue” that led to the offending.

The court was also told White’s cannabis issue intensified after his best friend passed away in tragic circumstances in late 2019, and he found cannabis had worked better than the anti-depressant prescribed to him.

White pleaded guilty to supplying and trafficking drugs and was sentenced to a two year jail term, with immediate parole.

The court was told White spent no time in presentence custody and as he was “petrified” of jail, his first conviction was a “huge wakeup call”.
