Douglas Nean is alleged to have stabbed a woman in day before police shot him

A man shot by police during a tense standoff is yet to be formally charged, and remains under police custody in a regional Queensland hospital.

The man shot by police during a tense standoff at a North Toowoomba home has been identified as a Douglas Nean.

The 45-year-old man was the subject of an arrest warrant before he allegedly stabbed a woman near the Royal Hotel on Sunday evening.

Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers said police had been searching for Mr Nean when they went to an address on Ruthven St.

“What we do know is on the previous day it was alleged he stabbed a female and was wanted in relation to that,” he said.

“We know that the male came out with two knives, and came towards a police officer who had no other alternative but to use his firearm.

“We are very lucky we have not had a police officer maimed or killed yesterday.”

Multiple police units including officers from the Dog Squad, the Criminal Investigation Branch and the Tactical Crime Squad surrounded the Ruthven St house about 5pm on Monday.

Mr Nean is alleged to have come at a Dog Squad officer first, who fired their weapon before he retreated into the house and threw objects at police.

He then went to the front of the house where is alleged to have threatened police again and was shot once in the chest.

Mr Nean is then alleged to have surrendered to police and was given immediate first aid.

Two police officers suffered minor injuries in the incident.

Police are waiting for Mr Nean to recover before they charge him and he remains in police custody in the Toowoomba Hospital.

The shooting is now the subject of a Queensland Police Service Ethical Standards investigation.
