The Toowoomba court heard the young woman was asleep when she woke to the man calling her derogatory names before strangling her with one hand.

The next time he did it, the court heard he used both hands while digging his thumbs into the front of her neck.

The third time he choked her, he slammed her into a door and threatened to stab her.

The court heard the teenager didn’t know why he was enraged and asked what was wrong, with the young man saying something about her parents not liking him.

The woman then consoled the man as he threatened to take his own life.

Following the assault, their relationship ended.
