Court documents have revealed a well-educated man, who worked as a teacher and counsellor, pleaded guilty to shocking acts of domestic violence which led to him being stabbed in the leg.

The 45-year-old Melbourne-born man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was at his partner’s house on June 5, 2022, for a small social gathering which included the consumption of cannabis, Toowoomba District Court was told.

Judge Paul Smith said the Toowoomba businessman left his partner’s home and asked to return later, but the woman said no, with the court told the man disregarded her opposition and went to her house anyway.

“You were told to sleep on the lounge, you produced a bottle of GHB (fantasy drug) and drank it,” Judge Smith said.

“She panicked, shouting took place, (and) you threw things around, including her phone, smashing it.”

The court was told after the woman spat at him, he punched her in the head, splitting it open and baring her skull.

“You then punched her in the mouth dislodging her bottom tooth,” Judge Smith said.

Judge Smith said the woman ran to the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and again told the man to leave her house.

“You approached her, she thought you were going to punch her and she lunged at you with the knife and stabbed you,” he said.

They were both taken to hospital.

The court was told the man had two cuts to his upper left and right thigh, which did not require stitches, however the woman’s head had to be stapled shut.

Judge Smith said the now businessman had “very good jobs” in the past, which included teaching, being a counsellor, a co-ordinator of a residential care program, and working in recruitment.

“The unusual feature about this case… is you had no criminal history before the age of 35. After that time, you have racked up a reasonably significant history - we are now up to page seven,” he said.

“You had used drugs socially over the years, but then you became addicted to severe drugs.

“It is also relevant, you were sexually abused… and you suffered PTSD.”

On March 14, the man pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm after spending nine months at Borallon jail.

Judge Smith said the 280 days spent in custody was sufficient punishment and declared it as time served, before sentencing him to a 20 month jail term with immediate parole.
