Bryan Neil Crisp was caught on CCTV camera mailing meth from Stanthorpe Post Office

A 35-year-old man was caught mailing 2.687g of pure meth to an associate in Cunnamulla. See what the court did with him this time.

Australia's growing drug crisis

A 35-year-old man described as a “recidivist drug offender”, who has spent seven of the past 10 years in jail, has been returned to prison for his latest drug offences.

Bryan Neil Crisp was caught on CCTV camera footage at Stanthorpe Post Office in December 2021 mailing a package that was later tracked to the Cunnamulla Post Office, Toowoomba Supreme Court was told.

When police searched the parcel it was found to contain a Christmas card to which three small plastic bags containing 2.687g of pure meth in 3.54g of substance had been attached, Crown prosecutor Nicole Friedewald said.

A subsequent police search of his Stanthorpe home had then found 5g of cannabis, two vials of a steroid based drug and a baton which was a restricted item, she said.

Crisp initially lied to police, telling them he had posted the parcel but didn’t know what was in it, she said.

On parole at the time, Crisp was returned to jail before being granted bail in April 2022.

However, just eight months later in December 2022, a police search of his home had turned up 16.3g of meth along with other drugs and utensils, Ms Friedewald said.

Crisp appeared in custody to plead guilty to supplying and possessing dangerous drugs and associated offences.

Ms Friedewald submitted Crisp had “an extensive and highly relevant” criminal history and described him as a “recidivist drug offender”.

Crisp’s barrister Mr McDougall conceded his client had a longstanding drug addiction who, by his calculations, had spent seven of the past 10 years in custody.

However, since this last stint in prison his client had been free of drugs, was working in the prison storeroom and was on the suboxone program to keep him free of drugs, he said.

It was Crisp’s intention upon his release from custody to move away from the Stanthorpe region, he said.

Justice Susan Brown sentenced Crisp to four and a half years in jail but, declaring 207 days of pre-sentence custody as time already served under the sentence, ordered he be eligible to apply for release on parole as of July 8, 2024.
