A Toowoomba woman was so affected by a “cocktail of substances” that even after snapping a power pole in half with her car, she continued driving until she stalled in the middle of the street.

Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard police called to the incident on Healy St, South Toowoomba, about 5.30pm on March 13, had found the car’s driver Amanda Gail Sleeman slurring her words and confused.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Julia Wheaton said despite mounting the footpath in her car, slamming into the power pole and then another vehicle, Sleeman had done a U-turn on Healy St and drove on, only stopping after the car stalled.

When a roadside breath test returned negative for alcohol, the 43-year-old was taken to Toowoomba Hospital where a sample of her blood was taken for analysis.

A certificate was returned showing Sleeman at the time had “a cocktail of substances” in her system.

Sleeman pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence of liquor or a drug.

Her solicitor Mike McElhinney told the court his client would have to pay for the damaged power pole which amounted to $6000.

Her insurance company was also not likely to support her for the damaged vehicles.

Sleeman was on workers compensation after alleged bullying incidents at her workplace of 15 years, and she had suffered epileptic fits two months before the incident and had to have brain scans before she could get her driver’s licence back, he said.

About one month before this incident, the 43-year-old single mother claimed she had been involved in personal traumatic circumstances and had been living with her son, Mr McElhinney said.

His client instructed on that day she had been tailgated by another vehicle and had been distracted, he said.

Magistrate Graham Lee said the incident had “very serious consequences”.

Mr Lee fined Sleeman $1000 and disqualified her from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence for nine months.
