Alec Matthew Curtis was so drunk he was found slumped over his steering wheel

The 27-year-old told police he had been drinking since 6pm the previous night and was trying to drive to Cambooya.

A 27-YEAR-OLD man found slumped over the steering wheel of his car near a busy Toowoomba CBD intersection was breath tested at almost four times the legal limit.

Police in the Safe Night Out precinct had spotted Alec Matthew Curtis’s car near the corner of Neil and Margaret Sts causing a traffic hazard about 3.30am, March 20.

When his car wasn’t moving, police moved in to find the 27-year-old slumped over his steering wheel and what appeared to be vomit on his shirt, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.

He told police he had drunk an unknown quantity of beers since 6pm the previous evening, police prosecutor Rohan Brewster-Webb told the court.

“He said he was attempting to drive to Cambooya,” Mr Brewster-Webb said.

After a roadside breath test proved positive, Curtis was taken to the police station where a breath analysis registered a breath/alcohol reading of 0.189, he said.

The self represented Curtis pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence of liquor.

He told the court he was a disability support worker and that he drove for his work.

Acting Magistrate Kay Ryan told Curtis he was ineligible to apply for a work licence due to the high reading.

Ms Ryan fined him $1800 and disqualified him from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence for nine months.
