In Hudson Oliver’s first attempt at photographing star trails, the talented young photographer captured an award-winning photo of Norfolk Island’s incredible night sky.
A recent graduate from Darling Downs Adventist College, the 18-year-old took the photo while on holiday at Norfolk Island in 2023, and last year he won UniSQ’s Creative Competition for this outstanding capture.
Norfolk Star Trails is a compilation of about 50 long exposure photos taken over 30 minutes, capturing the stars and their movement around the southern celestial pole.
“We went down to the foreshore to take the photo and we waited for the moon to set,” he said.
“The boat in the foreground made a lovely subject.”
With a particular interest in long exposure, landscape, and aerial photography, Mr Oliver’s passion for photography began at the age of nine when he got a drone.
“I love taking pictures of landscapes and nature like birds and wildlife,” he said.
“They’re usually pretty hard to capture so it’s really rewarding when you do get a good photo.”
Mr Oliver has continued to experiment with his photography and has found a new unique way to taking long-exposure shots that create a “firework effect”.
“You get a whisk, put some steel wool in it and then light the steel wool on fire and it creates sparks,” he said.
Mr Oliver has recently started his first year at Avondale University in NSW studying secondary education, but he will not be giving up his photography any time soon and is just starting to experiment with videography.
“I am hoping to potentially start a little business from (my photography) or sell some of my footage,” he said.
