A prominent Christian school is the latest across the Toowoomba region to propose an expansion, laying out plans for new temporary classrooms.
Toowoomba Christian College, which was first established in 1979 by the Toowoomba City Church, lodged a proposal with Toowoomba Regional Council this week to add a new learning block to its campus near Highfields.
According to the report by Precinct Urban Planning’s Paul Kelly, the new block will allow the school to cater for a 2023 cohort similar to what it had six years ago.
“This development will allow for a temporary classroom building of three general learning areas, to be used for secondary school purposes (years 7-8),” the report said.
“The construction of this building will assist the school’s in accommodating the anticipated 2023 total student population of 770, noting this is consistent with student numbers in 2016.
“Staff numbers will increase from 80 full-time-equivalent staff to 90 FTE staff.
“The building will only be used for education purposes during school hours.
“The building will have a gross floor area of 207.36 sqm and will have a 2.4m-wide veranda along the full length of the western side of the building.”
The application included reports into stormwater, traffic and effluent management.
TCC hasn’t been the only non-public school looking to grow over the past two years, with expansions either lodged, approved or under construction at Glenvale Christian School, Downlands, St Ursula’s, St Saviour’s, Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School and Good Samaritan College.
The government has also invest millions into creating new facilities at a number of state schools across Toowoomba.
The council has yet to respond to the TCC application.
