Students of a Toowoomba private school are bringing to the Empire Theatre stage the story of a romance between two teens who are worlds apart socially and defy the status quo by joining the cast of their high school musical.

After months of rehearsals, St Ursula’s College students are ready to showcase their hard-work and infectious enthusiasm with the well-known and well-loved story of Disney’s High School Musical on Stage.

“When I heard it was High School Musical, I was absolutely ecstatic and I couldn’t wait for auditions,” Eve Reimers said.

The year 11 student is taking on the role of new girl Gabriella Montez, and said she is very similar to the character as she is “passionate about maths and chemistry”.

Grace Thomas, also in year 11, has the role of Troy Bolton, the high school golden boy.

“I definitely do not relate to Troy, I’m an unathletic theatre kid,” Ms Thomas said.

“It’s definitely been challenging but it’s been really eye-opening to see the world through someone else’s perspective, especially through a golden boy athlete, the king-of-the-school type.”

Friendship and togetherness is what the play is about, according to director and college’s head of arts Lydia Pickard.

“No one is confined to one thing,” Ms Pickard said.

“Don’t let the world define you; let you define you.”

The inspiring musical will open on Thursday, June 13 at the Empire Theatre with following evening shows until Saturday, June 15.

Tickets are available on the Empire Theatre website.
