A group have been called out for their “stupid” and dangerous act after a local snapped them on the edge of a notorious crocodile-infested creek in Queensland’s rugged northeast.

The group of four were spotted by an outraged local only metres away from a crocodile while playing in and around the waters of Myall Creek at Cape Tribulation in the Daintree region.

“Few young guys playing at the water edge. Have also been standing in the water for some time … 4m croc sitting on sandbank around the corner. Be ‘crocwise’ even as a French,” he said.

In a Facebook post, the local said there the group were also spotted by local fishers and warning signs were “everywhere” at the creek, including where visitors can safely go to swim.

“It’s common sense that crocs are everywhere (here). You get told at every accommodation don’t go in the water – crocs living here … Humans have a brain, They can use them,” he said.

The reckless act comes after several high-profile crocodile attacks in Far North Queensland, including a NSW man suspected to have been taken by a crocodile at Cooktown.

Commenters online were quick to slam the actions of the group, noting that while the local said he did not call out to the visitors, he “doesn’t need to tell them” the obvious risks.

“They’re in crocodile country, there’s plenty of signs. Plenty of warnings. They’re choosing to ignore them. There’s a brain in everyone’s head, it’s about time they start using it,” one person said.

Others added “Darwinism at its finest. Sad part is if one of the rats gets taken then the poor croc gets shot” and “stupid is as stupid does. The whole area is dotted with warning signs”.

Some users suggested the local should have warned them about the risks, while another said “Most attacks are not fatal so while it’s good to be aware we can’t constantly be living in fear”.
