RUGBY UNION: With the scores locked at 7-all and less than a minute left on the clock, Downs Rugby general manager Matthew Hammond was preparing his officials for overtime on Friday night.
USQ Saints had other ideas though crashing over late to secure a thrilling 14-7 win over Souths in the under-14 boys grand final at Clive Berghofer Stadium.
“We were all getting ready for two five minute halves of overtime right when they (USQ) scored,” Hammond said.
“It was a thrilling end to the game. That game and Highfields Roses beating Bears who been strong for a few years now were the highlights of the night for me.
“The general standard in all the finals was great though – it’s some of the best teenage rugby I have seen in years.”
Aside from their loss in the under-16 girls final, Bears had a night to remember winning three of the four deciders they contested.
Adrian Young was one of the Toowoomba club’s best scoring a hat-trick in his side’s 46-10 defeat of Highfields.
Xavier Davey and Jack Jellicoe scored doubles in the match.
