FOOTBALL: The feathers flew at the weekend with Magpies dominating the Toowoomba Football League's top divisions.
Willowburn's women's team, who won the 2018 premiership without losing a game, kicked off proceedings with 2-1 win over Rockville Rovers on Sunday morning.
The club's Premier Men's teams rounded out the successful weekend with Willowburn White recording a 4-0 over West Wanderers and Willowburn FC dominating Highfields 10-0.
Rockville enjoyed all the early running in the women's game, asking questions of a disjointed Willowburn outfit.
Rovers striker Sam Stubbs then capitalised on her side's early domination opening the scoring in the 24th minute.
Given too much time on the ball Stubbs' well struck shot was too much for Willowburn keeper Nicole Mairs who able to get a hand to the ball.
The lead, however, was short lived. Willowburn skipper Kiama Gray dragged her side back into the contest just two minutes later.
Lining up a free-kick just outside the box Gray's thunderbolt left Rovers keeper Amy Mcdonnell with no chance of making a save.
The goal energised Willowburn who tested Mcdonell on several occasions before Ebonney Kidd doubled their advantage shortly before half-time.
Both sides had chances to score in the second half but Willowburn held firm for the win.
"The result is what we want, three points is good," Willowburn coach Matt Gatty said.
"At the start, we weren't playing what we should be playing.
"But they picked it up towards the end of the half and carried that (effort) through the second half.
"We did well going forward, linking the play from midfield to our striker and playing one-twos that created our chances.
"But we need to work on putting them away. We had a lot of shots that hit the crossbar, the post or went straight to the keeper."
With matches between the two sides traditionally close affairs, Gatty was happy to see his new recruits performing well.
"We lost a few players in the off-season," he said. "Coming into this season, bringing in new players, it's good to see how well they're doing and reassuring to know they're helping the team."
