Willowburn coach loves being able to help young players develop

Winter is a busy time for Willowburn’s Gerard Alchin. There is however a simple reason as to why the coach and club president dedicates so much of his time to coaching and volunteering.

FOOTBALL: It’s fair to say Gerard Alchin will have a lot more free time on his hands now.

With Toowoomba’s football season finishing weeks ago and his Football Queensland Community Cup commitments wrapping up at the weekend, the Willowburn Football Club president and coach can relax.

Alchin, who was recently voted by The Chronicle’s readers as the region’s best sports coach, loves his busy schedule though.

“One of main motivators is from when I was a kid,” Alchin said.

“At the time you don’t realise it as a kid, nor should you, but there were a lot of people when I was playing junior football who sacrificed their time so that I could have plenty of moments and memories on the field with my mates.

“As you get older, you develop hindsight, and I’m a big believer in giving back, and so I want to give back to the next generation of young athletes coming from.

“Apparent from that, I absolutely love the sport.

“And I love seeing players develop not just on the field in terms of skill and ability. I also love seeing them develop as people.

“One of my passions is helping people unlock their potential.”

This season Alchin coached Willowburn’s under-12 premiership winning squad, the senior men’s TFL Championship side and played a role with the TFL Conference men’s side.

He also coached the South West Queensland under-12 boys representative team at the FQ Community Cup.

His coaching commitments made for a demanding schedule, and Alchin is quick to thank his family and friends for allowing him to follow his passion.

“I want to thank my family, particularly my wife,” he said.

“She sacrifices a lot.

“Weekends is when we play most of our sport, but that can also be family time.

“She’s very understanding in that regard. She knows that I love sport, coaching, playing and Willowburn.

“I’m very thankful to have a family who is willing to compromise on that and allow me to do what I love.

“I absolutely could not do it without them, not only for their support but also their willingness to sacrifice their weekends particularly during the winter months.”
