LEAGUE: The Western Clydesdales will be in ‘fit hands’ when they take to the field in 2023.

The Hostplus Cup side has extended its deal with The Fit Lab ahead of a return to the Queensland Rugby League’s elite competition.

The Toowoomba gym and allied health centre will serve as the club’s strength and conditioning providers.

“It’s good news we are continuing our relationship with The Fit Lab,” Western Clydesdales chairman Tony Coonan said.

“We’ve been working with them since 2017 and we’re hoping it goes on for a long time.

“We know what’s happening here with strength and conditioning is absolute top quality and it is absolutely essential.

“Everybody knows we (the Clydesdales juniors) have struggled with wins, but I’ve received feedback from different clubs and people who have said ‘yeah we might have beaten them today but we know we’ve had a game against the Clydesdales because they muscle up and hit hard’.

“Our fitness levels have not been the problem this year.”

The Fit Lab’s high performance director Steve Nance will be a key figure in the Clydesdales physical development and wellbeing.

Nance brings a wealth of experience having worked with the Queensland Reds, Brisbane Broncos, North Queensland Cowboys and English Premier League club Fulham.

He has also worked with the Ipswich Jets and other state league teams.

“We’ve been involved with the (Clydesdales) under-16s, 18s, 20 and 21s for a number of years now The Fit Lab high performance director Steve Nance said.

“Now to have the Hostplus Cup side is a big step up in professionalism and we’re looking forward to the challenge.

“It’s an ongoing challenge in sport to keep up to date with what’s going on, but we’re fortunate that we do.

“I still talk to the Broncos and other strength and conditioning coaches, we use the latest in sports science and technology and with the young team we have here and the world class facilities. I think we will be able to handle it.”
