The Western Clydesdales have their first points of the 2025 BMD Premiership season – a convincing and at times gritty win over Northern Pride.

Playing in front of a passionate home crowd, the Clydesdales crossed the line six times in their 30-14 victory.

Speaking to this masthead before the season kicked off last weekend, new Clydesdales coach Richard Dugdale promised his team would “focus on winning the mini competitions and contests in every game,” and the team did just that on Saturday.

A big, mobile and hard-running Pride pack punched holes in the Clydesdales’ line in the early exchanges, but it was the home team who scored first.

Morgan Prentice and Janet Morofa tries inside the first 10 minutes knocked the win out of the Pride.

“We knew it was going to be tough defensively and a real grind, particularly in the first 10 minutes,” Taylor Fenton said.

“The girls back themselves every day, we’re firstly strong and confident we can get them (teams) in the back end of halves, but we have to really dig in early.

“We dug deep and got the result which we’re really happy with.”

Pride responded to the Clydesdales’ double with two tries of their own before a late Mia Byrnes’ first half try secured a 14-10 halftime lead.

With the Pride pack tiring in the second half, the Clydesdales went to work up the middle breaking through gaps and scoring a further three tries.

“In the second we definitely went back to playing our game,” Fenton said.

“We went at them through the middle, got to our kicks and pinned them down their end.

“That possession in the end is how we got the win.

“We made them defend for nearly the entire second half.

“We knew it would be tough, they’re a good team, so we’re really happy to come away with the win.”
