LEAGUE: Pumped and confident in their pre-season training, the newly formed 2023 Western Clydesdale squad is ready to debut their new kit ahead of this weekend’s trial match against the New South Wales Cup’s Canterbury Bulldogs.
Inspired by the lasting legacy of the Clydesdales with room to leave their own mark, the home kit features the memorably sky blue with supporting sponsors.
“There’s a lot of culture and history behind the club, so it’s really cool that they’ve adapted the name The Western Clydesdales … we’re really excited,” Clydesdales Forward Darryn Schonig said.
Schonig, who was previously linked to the Melbourne Storm, said the weekend showdown against the Bulldogs would help the newly formed Clydesdales find their feet ahead of their inaugural HostPlus season.
“(We’ll) take it at our own pace, see where we are, see who our voice in the team is and start putting together our players and team structure,” he said.
“We want to see where we’re lacking, where we’re excelling and where we can improve.”
Fullback Jayden Corrigan said the game was set to be a “high-quality” and competitive match this Saturday, with the main game kick off scheduled for 4.30pm.
“We want to drive the standards of the club, and hopefully we can be a competitive team this year,” he said.
“Trust the process and work that you’ve put in.”
The Clydesdales are returning to the Queensland Cup franchise as a feeder team for the Canterbury Bulldogs after almost two decades.
The U16 Western Clydesdales will kick off a day of footy against the Wide Bay Bulls from 11.10am, with the U21s at 3pm and the main QLD vs NSW cup from 4.30pm.
Tickets can be purchased at the Clive Berghofer Stadium gates or through the Western Clydesdales site.
