Inaugural Moriconi/Bomben Cup Preview

The Cairns Italian Festival with the help of Mareeba United, Leichhardt FC and Football Queensland Far North & Gulf have forged together to create an exciting new initiative and celebration to life.

The Moriconi/Bomben Cup has been established to honour the immense contributions of Alfio Moriconi and John Bomben.

It serves as a celebration of their legacy and a testament to their dedication to the sport. Through the Moriconi/Bomben Cup, the dedication to the sport of these two passionate Football Italian immigrants will be never forgotten.

Alf Moriconi and John Bomben are two godfathers of football in the Far North, both are Italian immigrants who moved to Far North Queensland, made it home and helped make football in FNQ what is today.

Their two loves – Football and their Clubs, Alfio – Mareeba United and John – Leichhardt FC.

These sides will come together on the hollowed turf at Lindsay Australia Stadium, Mareeba on Saturday, 5 August to be crowned the inaugural Moriconi/Bomben Cup Champions.

Both Alfio and John helped forge both clubs into the force they are today, but also contributed largely to the growth of the sport in the region, both served time in the former Soccer Far North board, both were involved in the administration and growth of junior and senior football across the entire region.

The event serves as a reminder of the incredible contributions made by these two remarkable individuals in shaping the football landscape in the region.

The Stratford Dolphins make the trek North to Port Douglas this Friday night to face the Douglas Dragons in a crucial McDonald’s FQPL Far North & Gulf Women’s clash.

The Dolphins have recorded four wins in a row to sit just four points behind fourth place Southside Comets Halleys with a game in hand.

The Dragons face a tough test against an in-form Dolphins outfit who have 17 goals in their past four matches.

The Dragons have found it tough over their last three matches, facing three of the top four sides.

The Dragons will be aiming to bounce back at home and break their three-game losing streak, while the Dolphins will be pushing to cut the deficit to the Halleys in fourth and sneak into finals.

Catch all the action from 7:30pm at the Port Douglas Sports Complex.

Gold Coast

Kappa Pro Series Final Preview – Gold Coast Knights vs. Olympic FC

The inaugural Kappa Pro Series final is upon us as Gold Coast Knights take on Olympic FC this Friday night.

The Knights will be eager to get their hands on the first available silverware for the 2023 season and will be in confident form having tasted victory over the same opposition in last year’s NPL Men’s grand final.

While the Pro Series Final will be a 2022 NPLQLD Grand Final rematch, both teams have had vastly differing fortunes in 2023.

Knights currently hold a 5-point lead at the top of the NPL Men’s table, while Olympic are currently languishing in the relegation zone.

While Knights enter the weekend favourites, they will be wary of an Olympic side that will be desperate to secure some silverware in an otherwise disappointing campaign.

Tickets and hospitality packages are now available for the inaugural KappaProSeries Final next Saturday at AJ Kelly Park, you can also catch the game live on FQTV.

Match of the Week Men – McDonald’s FQPL 2 Men

Magic United vs. Taringa Rovers

Magic United head into McDonald’s FQPL 2 Men’s action against Taringa Rovers on Saturday night knowing that nothing other than a win will suffice for their finals football hopes.

With top four rivals Holland Park Hawks sitting narrowly behind on goal difference in fifth place, Magic will be desperate to bounce back from their loss to Grange Thistle last weekend. They face off against a Taringa Rovers side with fading finals hopes of their own, with Taringa knowing any dropped points at the weekend will see them all but fall out of finals contention.

While Magic have been on a positive recent run, they will be aware of the threat posed by Taringa, as the last meeting between the sides ended with the Rovers emerging 3-2 winners.

Catch the action at Birmingham Road from 5:30pm, or watch live on FQTV.

Match of the Week Women – NPL Queensland Women

Gold Coast United vs. Lions FC

It is yet another big weekend for Gold Coast United in the NPL Women’s competition, as they play host to league leaders Lions FC this Saturday night at Coplicks Family Sports Park.

With just four games remaining in the regular season, United know that they need to continue their winning form to secure their place in the top four for finals football, while Lions FC continue their premiership hunt knowing that a win and dropped points elsewhere could hand them the NPL Women’s premiership this weekend.

Lions were 3-1 winners the last time the two sides met in what was an action-packed encounter.

Since the loss at Luxury Paints Stadium in May, Gold Coast United will enter the weekend in a confident mood, having put together an impressive run of form since their loss to Lions, winning six and drawing one of their last eight appearances.

With two of the strongest attacks in the league facing off against each other, this fixture is sure to provide some high-quality entertainment.

Head down to Coplicks Family Sports Park on Saturday night or watch the match live on FQTV!
