The new women’s Toowoomba cricket competition is set to kick off this weekend, with Northern Brothers Diggers, Western Districts, Highfields and Southern Districts all set to battle for glory.

We have shone a light on the players set to make their mark in this new era of women’s cricket and who will hold the key to success for each team.

Check out some of the players set to light up the Garden City.

Souths

Jo Butcher was one of the first players to sign on for Souths this season and revealed who has caught her eye for the Magpies throughout the lead up to the competition.

“There are a few ladies who have been playing within the social games over the last couple of years who have honed their bowling talents,” she said.

“These are Izzy Althaus, Harpinder Kaur and Mel Lyell.

“Other impressive bowlers new to the Toowoomba scene are Jordyn Thureson, Teagan Davidson and Alice Rigby.

“Batters who have worked hard to maximise their skills over the last few years, are showing improvement every game and who we should be on the lookout for are Mini Benny, Kylie Carson and April Lancaster-Smith.

“The team spirit at Souths is unrivalled and every player is a valued member.

“They support each other at their weekly training sessions and the encouragement continues throughout the games.”

Northern Brothers Diggers

Tammy Marshall: The captain and the most experienced player in the Northern Brothers group, Marshall will be one to watch this season. Both of her children are members of the Diggers family and she brings a successful women’s indoor cricket resume to the team.

Margie Hamlet: Margie Hamlet played in the women’s winter comp last year and is an aggressive batter who top scored in one of the recent pre-season trial games.

Bobbie Hamlet: Already a hockey goalkeeping superstar, she’s also an aggressive batter who is set to thrive in the new competition.

Brianna Moon: Moon is in her debut cricket campaign but brings plenty of sporting experience having played for Coolaroo in the AFL Darling Downs competition. What she lacks in experience she makes up for in strength and will be a danger player if she gets going.

Sam Borey: A fierce competitor who is another cricket rookie who boasts experience in other sport. Borey has had plenty of success with Willowburn Football Club and Northern Brothers officials are excited to see what she can bring to the team in 2024.

Wests

Ingrid Nichols: An ex Australian schoolgirl cricketer who spent the last few years in the wilderness, making a comeback in last year’s Winter Blast.

Kayleen Beer: A Toowoomba local who mainly played in the indoor form of the game. Beer has a solid defence and is an x-factor with the ball.

Megan Lefrenz: The Dalby gun is looking to make her mark against some of the rising stars of Toowoomba cricket.

Emilie Peck: The young Toowoomba prodigy made her mark in junior cricket but now has the chance to shine in the senior women’s competition.
