LAWN BOWLS : The men’s gold medal match in this year’s Bowls Queensland Champion of Champions at North Toowoomba Bowls Club yesterday promised a close battle and to the script, the players delivered.

Red Hill’s Ben Walsh and Booval Swifts’ Glen Pitts staged one of the most captivating encounters for the Queensland title in many years.

After an even start at 4-all, Pitts powered his way to a 13-4 led and seemingly on track for a big win.

But Walsh regathered and slowly pegged back the lead, end by end, to the point the game was levelled at 14-all before he forged clear to win 25-19.

In one of the most enthralling women’s gold medal finals, rising Australian young talent Chloe Stewart from Tweed Heads held her nerve against experienced campaigner Liz Parry to capture a unique double at the tournament.

After grabbing gold in the women’s fours played over the weekend, Stewart withstood the early pressure applied by Parry before turning the tables when it most mattered to win 25-15.
