UQ women win Rugby 7s glory in Roma with flawless victory

Roma Rugby Sevens trophies head to Brisbane.

RUGBY UNION : Visiting players again plundered the major prize money when Gallas Fox Park hosted almost 30 teams for last weekend's annual Santos Roma Sevens tournament.

More than 750 people attended Saturday's carnival featuring 17 men's teams and 12 women's sides vying for more than $20,000 prize money at the Roma rugby club event.

Brisbane Fiji defeated Island Breeze 10-7 to take home the men's trophy.

UQ women took out the women's competition with a 38-0 demolition of Roma Sevens debutants Noosa Dolphins.

Tournament manager David Hickey told the Western Star he appreciated the support of teams that travelled large distances to attend.

"It was a hugely successful day, culminating in two excellent cup finals - UQ Women's versus Noosa Dolphins and the razzle dazzle of Brisbane Fiji just getting up on Island Breeze," he said.

Roma Rugby Sevens returns next year on February 6.

Carnival rugby continues on Saturday week when teams from far and wide line up for the seventh annual Ironjack Aubigny 10s tournament at Gold Park.
