FOOTBALL: A lacklustre 30 minutes almost proved costly for USQ FC at the weekend.

Facing West Wanderers, the ladder leaders flew out of the blocks securing a 5-0 lead by half-time.

Benjamin Adams was the chief destroyer opening the scoring in just the second minute before going on to score a hat-trick.

Goals to Jacob Stoner and Cormac McCarthy rounded out the opening stanza and USQ was seemingly in control.

"We were out of the blocks like a sprinter," USQ coach Matt Proctor said.

"We played some fantastic football for the first 60 minutes and could've been up by a lot more.

"But then it looked like someone just let the air out of our balloon."

Duncan Fowler pegged a goal back for Wanderers in the 67th minute and the hosts piled on the pressure with two more late goals.

Ali Mohammadi scored in the 78th and Fowler added his second in the 89th minute.

But USQ held on for the win.

"I can't explain why some players decided to ease off in those last 30 minutes," Proctor said.

"We're lucky we weren't really punished.

"I take some responsibility as I made a number of substitutions late in the game that probably affected the rhythm of the team. I won't make that mistake again.

"Ultimately you want the players to go on with it and keep up the pace, though.

"It's something we will address at training this week."

In the women's competition, West Wanderers' defensive will be glad to see the back of Samantha Stubbs.
