TRL Alleged Racist Voice over

Two Toowoomba Rugby League commentators have been stood down while the governing body investigates a possible code of conduct breach.

The decision comes in the wake of accusations commentator Andrew O’Brien used a “mock Indigenous accent” while commentating on the Dalby Diehards and Pittsworth Danes A-grade match on June 30.

During the live call O’Brien can be heard saying “I’m all right brus you play the ball” before fellow commentator Anthony Breeze asks “Is that how he talks? He’s a white fella”.

O’Brien then replies, “No that is just how I talk”.

Investigations by this masthead found the audio from the game that was posted to the TRL Facebook page had been edited to mute out the controversial moment but the original audio remains online.

In a statement emailed to The Chronicle, TRL confirmed it was investigating the matter after a Queensland Rugby League Positive Environment Program Incident report was submitted.

TRL STATEMENT

“Toowoomba Rugby League (TRL) confirms that the organisation is investigating an incident that occurred during the A Grade match between Pittsworth and Dalby.

“It has been alleged that the TRL Call Team’s broadcast breached the Code of Conduct, including that a commentator used a “mock Indigenous accent” during the broadcast.

“A QRL Positive Environment Program Incident Report was submitted, resulting in the TRL initiating an investigation.

“The commentators involved have been stood down from the TRL Call Team pending the outcome of the investigation.

“Additionally, one of the commentators, who is also a TRL Board Director, has been stood down from the TRL Board pending the investigation’s outcome.

“Queensland Rugby League (QRL) is assisting in the process being conducted by the TRL.

“While it is very disappointing to hear about this incident, we have strong procedures and policies in place to address such matters across the game.

“There is no place for racist behaviour in sport or in wider society.

“Racism must be called out in all its forms.

“While individuals bring their own views and behaviours into sporting environments, rugby league as a whole continues to make clear our expectations when you step into our environment.

“When individuals or clubs do not meet these expectations, we will be unequivocal in the sanctions we impose.”
