RUGBY LEAGUE: Toowoomba’s Jake Simpkin and the Wests Tigers were just inches away from causing the boilover of the NRL season.
In the hooker’s first grade debut against the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Stadium Australia, the Southern Suburbs junior was outstanding in his first crack at the top flight.
Simpkin played the entire 82 minutes in the golden point thriller, as the Rabbitohs crossed the line to win in the most dramatic of circumstances.
Right in the thick of things, Simpkin led all players with 58 tackles for the contest, and made 68 metres from his seven runs, undeterred by the rise in grade.
His effort in the 79th minute to chase down and force a missed drop goal from Adam Reynolds was symbolic of his effort right to the end for the Tigers.
On Thursday night, Brodie Croft finished with two try assists for the Broncos as they pushed the Penrith Panthers right to the end, only to fall 20-12 at Suncorp Stadium.
