Toowoomba sides downed in rep fixtures

TOOWOOMBA has endured a tough start to the Mitchell and Davis Shield campaigns with a pair of home losses.

CRICKET: Toowoomba's representative sides had a tough day out at Highfields Sports Park at the weekend.

In the Mitchell Shield against Central Downs, Toowoomba was unable to get into a rhythm from the outset as they batted first.

Gavin Steger (20 runs) and James Bidgood (19) provided some resistance at the top of the order, but that would be as much as they could muster, as they were dismissed for 116 in 39.4 overs.

Southern Districts' Harjinder Dhillon did the damage with the ball for Central Downs, taking 5/16 from nine overs, while Metropolitan-Easts bowler Pieter van der Kooij had figures of 1/12 from five overs.

Toowoomba was able to take wickets at a somewhat steady pace as they tried to defend their total, but it was all in vain, with Central Downs reaching the target inside 27 overs, giving them a five-wicket victory.

Toowoomba was only able to score 113 in their run chase, led by Matt Nunn's 30 and an unbeaten 20 from Beil., as they fell to a 34 run loss.
