Wattles Warriors will be without one of their superstar players this season after Austin Jennings suffered an ACL injury in pre-season.

Jennings has been one of Toowoomba Rugby League’s brightest stars in recent years – scoring more than 50 tries over the last two seasons.

Despite the major setback, Wattles coach Travis Burns has full confidence in his squad to fill the void while their star man sits out the season.

“It’s a big blow, he’s a strike centre and unfortunately he’s had a knee injury in a trial so it is what it is,” he said.

“Hopefully he can get back, get his knee operated as soon as he can and get back on the field as quick as he can, we probably won’t see him on the field this year but he’s looking to get it right for next year.

“It is hard to replace someone that late, it only happened a few weeks ago so it wasn’t really something we were planning on but whoever comes in to that position will stand up and play well.

“It is an opportunity for a young fella or a reserve grader to come up and cement their spot in A-grade.”

While he may not be out on the field this season, Burns has no doubt that Jennings will remain a presence around the club and help the squad as they look to return to the heights of 2022, when they took home the A-grade premiership in emphatic fashion.

“He will get around our club, he is still signed with our club and still a part of our club,” Burns said,

“He has been a part of our club for a while now so he will get around the boys and we won’t be able to get rid of him.”
