Australia are the queens of world rugby again and two former Fairholme students are partly responsible.
Demi Hayes and Dominique du Toit played leading hands in the Pearls gold medal success.
The Aussies beat Fiji 22-12 in a thrilling grand final to claim their first Commonwealth Games gold medal.
Speaking to The Chronicle before flying to Birmingham Hayes, who co-captained the team, expected the Games to be tough but also believed Australia had the squad to win gold.
“We know we’re up against some really tough opposition,” she said.
“Some of the best teams in the world – we’re ready though.
“We’ve had a really good World Rugby Sevens Series, been training hard and we’re determined.
“A big part of our focus has been on working for the team – making sure everyone knows their role, what’s expected of them and makes the sacrifices the team needs to succeed.
“I think we’re in with a great shot at gold.”
Hayes predictions were ‘proven’ with Australia loss to Fiji in the group stage setting up a nightmare encounter with New Zealand in the semi-final.
Australia dug deep against the Kiwis fighting back to secure a 17-12 win off the back of hat-trick from dual code football star Maddison Levi.
“After a dominant performance against New Zealand, that gave us plenty of confidence coming into this game and we started unbelievably,” co-captain Charlotte Caslick said.
“I think in those physical contests, we dominated nearly every single one and that’s what we came out to do. I wouldn’t say it was perfect (performance) but it was close to.
“We’ve had an amazing World Series and it’s been a dominant year, so to be rewarded in front of an awesome crowd is pretty special.”
Levi was in the thick of things in the final with her first half double helping set up a 17 point lead for the Aussies at the break.
“Our second objective for 2022 has been achieved,” head coach Tim Walsh said.
“The team executed when it really counted and it wasn’t luck, I believe we worked harder and smarter than every other team.
“There were many family and friends there to support us and the memories tonight will last a lifetime.
“Players and staff of all experiences were challenged and learned something about themselves during this campaign and we are a far better team for the experience.
“All players contributed here in Birmingham and back in Sydney but it would be remiss of me not to mention the empress of Sevens, Charlotte Caslick, who was phenomenal once again. One of Australia’s best athletes.”
