ROWING: There is nowhere to hide on the Concept2 Indoor Rower.

It's a sensation Toowoomba's Pete Roberts knows all too well now that he is a regular on the indoor rowing competition scene.

The hard training sessions and exhausting races are not without their benefits though with Roberts claiming silver at the 2018 World Rowing Indoor Virtual Sprints.

After competing in March Roberts finally received his medal late last week making his accomplishment all the more real.

"It's a great feeling, I'm really happy," Roberts said.

"After finishing fourth last year, I was pretty keen to sign up again this year and do better.

"Coming second in the world is great."

Competing in the 50-55 year old lightweight division Roberts posted a time of 3 minutes 11.3 seconds over 1000m at his gym The Fit Lab.

"Competing at the Masters Games has been on my bucket list for a while," Roberts said.

"I originally thought about CrossFit but eventually settled on rowing instead.

"It (rowing) has been part of my gym routine for a while and I enjoy it so I thought why not. It was a pretty simple process as well - you can compete anywhere as long as it's on a Concept2 Rower and you have your time verified."

It's not the first time Roberts has enjoyed success either.

"Last year I competed at the Australian Championships and won four gold medals," he said.

"Hopefully I can do just as well at the Queensland and Australian championships this year."

It's a remarkable strike rate considering how simplified Roberts' approach to racing is.

"I just really focus on my split times," he said.

"I try to keep them down and stay consistent.

"Over the last 100-200m I'm trying to hang in there as best I can and in the last 50m I just go flat out."
