NETBALL: Teenage sensation Kaylin van Greunen is clawing out a season to remember.
The Darling Downs Panthers goal-shooter has ticked off just about every achievement imaginable this year – including an Australian squad call-up.
Van Greunen was one of 36 players named in Netball Australia’s under-17 national squad last week.
“I was shocked and confused when I received the email,” van Greunen said.
“I thought because nationals had been cancelled that they wouldn’t be naming an Australian or they’d pick the players from the previous.
“Once I got past that shock I was very happy and excited.”
In the absence of national championships squad selection was based on a number of criteria including demonstrated skill and the potential for development and growth.
Van Greunen, who starred for the Panthers this season and also earned Queensland selection, attributes her success to “community”.
“I have a fantastic community surrounding me,” she said.
“The Panthers, family, friends, school – they all believe in and support me and that helps me believe in myself a lot more.”
Toowoomba netball talent and Bond University netballer Ava Black was named in the Australian under-19 squad.
