The future of Toowoomba women’s basketball is in safe with the Mountaineers under-14 girls proving they are stars on the rise.

Tipping off in Cairns the Mountaineers won the Basketball Queensland U14 Girls Division 2 State Championships at the weekend – adding to the SQJBC title they won earlier this season.

Mountaineers representative Matt Cox said it is a massive result for what is proving to be an extremely talented group of young players.

“It’s a great sign for the girls’ and women's’ program. A lot of people have been working very hard on it (the program) and these girls are proving to be very talented,” he said.

“We headed north keen to build on the success we had in winning the SQJBC regular season and we added the Division 2 title.

“We have a number of girls selected in future development squads and programs which is an amazing achievement for a Division 2 team and a lot who are not far off the mark.

“It’s a credit to everyone involved and a great sign for the future of the Mountaineers.”

With the SQJBC season and state championships we’ve run the rule over the Mountaineers U14 girls squad and how they’ve contributed this representative season.

Akeer Adol

An incredible athlete whose pace in transition troubles opposition defences. Has shown great improvement on the defensive end and hit the clutch free throws that helped her side win the SQJBC title.

Elizabeth Kluck

Just like her famed Mountaineers dad Stephen, Elizabeth is a defensive presence blocking shots with ease. On the attacking end her ‘good hands’ and skills help her turn opportunities into points in the paint.

Freya Shipton

A bottom age player with massive potential. A scoring threat with high basketball IQ and vision.

Imani Mandikiza

An elite defensive rebounder who plays well above her size and can guard anyone on the court.

Imogen Staley

A valuable player in her first season of representative basketball. Staely has an impact off the bench, passes well and is solid rebounder.

Makanaka Ngorima

One of the team’s stars in the state championship grand final. Ngorima uses her body well to create opportunities to score or pass and is proving to be a great back up point guard.

Milly Steggall

Runs the floor well, competes for every loose ball and is a good finisher around the rim.

Stella Nolan

Another all out effort player who competes for every ball and is handy on the offensive end.

Yar Deng

One of the team’s biggest improvers this season, Deng is lightning quick in transition and gets to the free throw line often.
