Toowoomba Grammar School sets its sights on GPS football title

FOOTBALL: Grammar has their sights set on a third GPS title.

A number of teams can still consider themselves title hopefuls, but a win for Grammar this Saturday would certainly push them ahead of the pack.

At home to Churchie, their biggest rivals for the title, Grammar First XI captain Fletcher McDonald said it would be business as usual.

"I think we're all a little bit nervous but also very excited,” McDonald said.

"It will be great to be at home in front of big supportive crowd for this game.

"It'll be important that we start at 100% and just play our normal game.”

That "normal game” is a brand of football that requires the team to simply play what's in front of them.

"We focused heavily in pre-season on playing dynamic football,” McDonald said.

"It's about doing what we have to do to win games - keeping things and playing our game.”

For head coach Matt Proctor it's all about respecting the occasion and the opposition.

"It's a very difficult competition,” Proctor said.

"And I think we (Grammar) have a reputation as a very good football program which means a lot of teams play with the hope of turning us over.

"That is why we prepare for every game the same way.

"We treat every game as though it is a cup final and treat our opponents with the utmost respect.”

Both Grammar and Churchie have the one loss to their names this season - Grammar losing to Gregory Terrace in round one while Churchie fell to Southport in round two.

Kick-off on Saturday is 1.15pm on the main football oval at Toowoomba Grammar School.
