FOOTBALL: Toowoomba Grammar School's young footballers are a step closer to their Bill Turner Cup dream.

The team recently booked its place in the national round of 16 with a convincing 4-1 defeat of Albany Creek.

Grammar didn't have it all its own though - fighting back from a goal down before going on to victory.

"We went to a cracking goal inside three minutes,” coach Chris McLeod said.

"It was one of the best school-boy goals I have ever seen.

"But the boys showed some real spirit and we got it back to 1-1 by halftime.

"In the break we talked about what we needed to do and the boys went out there and scored three unanswered goals - we bought on some fresh legs in the second half and it made a big difference.”

Last year Grammar finished third in the nation-wide cup competition after beating Whitebridge High 3-1 in the play-off match.

McLeod believes the current squad has the ability to match and potentially better that result.

"There's a very different look to the team this year,” McLeod said. "Last year we had two or three real stand-outs.

"Our strength now is in how well we play as unit; there is a real bond among the boys.

"No-one stands above the pack they all work hard for each other.”

Team captain Ben Moore supports his coach's views.

"We've got a good mix of players in the team,” he said. "We just put our heads down and work hard for each other.”

Grammar will face Kawana Waters State College on August 7 in the Queensland semi-final - with a spot in the state final equating to a national quarter-final berth.
