RACING: Class rose to the top when Toowoomba six-year-old Mishani El Lobo swept to victory in today’s David & Paul Winter Dalby Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Bunya Park.
Mishani El Lobo ($6) maintained his impressive form since recently joining Toowoomba trainer Troy Pascoe with an all-the-way display under 60kg for apprentice Nathan Fazackerley.
He defeated Bold Endeavour ($7.50) by a half-length.
Scrabble ($5.50) was another ¾ length back third with $2.70 favourite Tisani Magic running on late from last on straightening to finish fourth.
Fazackerley has ridden Mishani El Lobo twice for two wins and paid credit to Pascoe’s performance with the gelding since he arrived at the stable.
“He’s a good horse and I’ve formed a good association with him,” Fazackerley said.
“Mr Pascoe had him spot on for today.
“He told me not to worry about his last unplaced run in town when he probably needed the run and he was a fitter horse today.
“I’m very grateful for the opportunities Mr Pascoe is giving me on this horse and other and others from the stable.
“I didn’t want to lead today, but he jumped well and put himself there.
“I knew coming to the corner I had the second horse’s measure and I knew it would take a good one to run him down in the straight.”
The day’s co-feature finished in a family celebration when Tapa did best in a blanket finish to claim the Wild River Concrete Lightning Handicap (800m).
Tapa ($6) was having her first start since October and edged out Rockhampton gelding Allround Glory ($7.50) for mother-and-son training partners Kylie and Corey Geran with husband and father Geran in the saddle.
Race favourite Godfather’s Girl ($2.70) was a further half-length away third.
“She has a great fresh record with four first-up wins from six starts coming into today,” Gary said.
“She’s been working great and we were really confident about her chances today.”
Long-time Dalby & Northern Downs Jockey Club supporters Michael and Val Kelly pulled off an unusual victory when Bobbie Jo scored a welcome breakthrough for Oakey trainer Patrick Sexton.
Bobbie Jo ($6) flashed late for Geran to win the QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Handicap (1100m) sponsored by Michael and Val.
“This filly is a half sister to Rosie Posie who has been such a great mare for us and that makes it three winners out of three now for us now from the mare (Monaleah),” Michael said.
