The 58 male and female hockey President’s Cup stars to watch

Ahead of Saturday’s finals, The Chronicle names the top male and female, junior and senior players to watch in the Toowoomba Hockey President’s Cup. Find out who made the list.

With the first silverware of the 2023 Toowoomba Hockey Association season on the line, Clyde Park will be a hive of activity on Saturday.

Competitive play gets underway at 9.30am with Norths Tigers and Past High under-11 boys squaring off in the first of 16 President’s Cup games.

The President’s Cup pits the top two teams from each division after round 1 against each other.

Ahead of Saturday’s big day The Chronicle Sport Team run the rule over the key players to watch.

Norths Tigers U11 Boys

Cooper Gollan: A cool and calm head at centre half who leads by example. Gollan has outstanding ball control and is a skilled player.

Alex Merrell: Can play in a number of different positions but has found his groove at fullback. Merrell has an eye for the ball and his clearance hits are among the best in division.

Past High U11 Boys

Lachie Belanyi: An experienced young star who makes great tackles in defence. Belanyi is also very reliable on attacking on short corners. Loves a good ‘overhead’ to turn defence into attack.

Colten Hart: A speedy midfielder/striker with great stick work and an ability to get around defenders. A great leader and team player.

Rangeville J2 Girls

Holly Purcell: Troubles defenders with her speed and skills and is always good for a goal or two.

Emmy Cussons: Works hard for her team in attack and defence, Emmy is also a very determined and focused player.

Lachlan Groves is a key player for Newtown.

Newtown J2 Boys

Lachlan Groves: A talented midfielder who organises play well and attacks with vigour.

Will Corney: A rising star who chases the ball down, loves to score goals and leaves it all on the field.

Past High J2 Boys

Kai Dwyer: An experienced star who works hard on and off the ball. Dwyer is a committed player and natural leader.

Kai Fraser: A fantastic team player in defence who gives it his all, and doesn’t stop till the whistle has gone.

Newtown U13 Girls

Erin Siebuhr: A strong leader and defender who hits the ball hard and has a good passing game.

Olivia Gollan: A determined attacker with a skilful drag and is also a handful for opposition defences.

Rangeville U13 Girls

Savannah Patterson: A great influence in attack and defence and a real leader.

Hannah Chard: A rock in defence with a booming hit to get her team out of trouble.

Newtown J1 Boys

Luke Siebuhr: A dependable midfielder/defender with a great passing game and high work rate.

Samuel Bourke: A reliable defender who instils confidence in the players around him.

Past High J1 Boys

Will Cronk: A cool, calm and collected defensive midfielder who controls the game and has excellent stick skills.

Jackson Smiddy: A good ball running midfielder with the ability to create dangerous goal scoring opportunities.

Newtown A2 Men

Aaron Keneally: Troubles defenders with his work rate, skill and speed. A versatile player who can line up wherever he is needed.

Grant Clarke: An old school defender who tackles hard and passes well out of the backline.

Norths A2 Men

Matthew Tarlinton: A key man for sometime now, Tarlinton is quick, agile and knows how to find the back of the net.

Paul Warhurst: A wall at the back, Warhurst is a strong and agile keeper.

Newtown A1 Women

Amanda Ross: Calm and composed in the middle of the park or in defence, Ross has great distributions skills and a powerful hit.

Aimee Doveton: A skilful midfielder who is strong on the ball.

Past High A1 Women

Monique Thomas: A fast paced striker with a good eye and always happy to pull the trigger when in site of the goal.

Rebecca Stark: A steadying influence at the back who is fast paced and can always be relied upon in defence.

Norths J1 Girls

Hailey Warhurst: An agile goalkeeper with quick reflexes and is hard to beat.

Jane Butler: A strong midfielder with excellent vision, passing skills and always seems to make the right decision.

Past High J1 Girls

Emily Hawthorne: An exciting hardworking midfielder who loves to push forward into attack.

Addison Jones: Has lots of speed and is able to use her skill to manoeuvre her way through the defence.

Norths A4 Women

Judy Russell: A fit and experienced midfielder with great game knowledge and stick skills.

Tammie Neighbour: The new addition is a quality striker who is difficult to handle.

Rangeville A4 Women

Kristy Dardenne: A critical part of the team’s success to date, Darenne is a formidable presence in goal.

Rechelle Steinhardt: A defender with a strong tackle and powerful hit who makes her in attack as well.

Red Lion A2 Women

Jess Burke: Fit and fast, the striker also applies defensive pressure and has a great cross.

Amy Seibenhaisen: An attack minded halfback who works hard right across the field and is a natural leader.

Newtown A2 Women

Emma Kingdom: Back after 12 months off after having a baby, Kingdom is a strong centre half with the ability to influence the game in attack and defence. She directs the team well with great communication skills.

Jessica Van Der Werff: An important player who has a strong tackle and ability to read the play. She remains calm under pressure and is also dangerous on attacking penalty corners.

Newtown A4 Men

Matt Russell: A reliable and safe fullback who can quickly turn defence into attack.

Alex Eddie: A star on the rise, Eddie can run all day and can find the back of the net.

Past High U11 Girls

Caesia Johnson: A tenacious midfielder with a massive work rate who loves to tackle and set up attacking plays.

Mali Robertson: A fast striker who works hard, loves to win the ball off the opposition and run into space.

Rangeville U11 Girls

Armani Jackson: Experienced player despite her young age. Tackles well in defence

Grace Mathews: An up and coming goalkeeper who will need to be at her best to keep Past High at bay.

Past High A1 Men

Matt Hawthorne: A quick midfielder with high level elimination skills and extremely threatening drag flick on penalty corners.

Jay Mogg: An experienced defender with great one-on-one tackling skills and controlled outletting pass.

Past High U13 Boys

Trea Middleton: A powerful, fast striker with a knack for scoring on the counter attack.

Eli McCurley Ault: A smart, skilful striker who leads well into space. Ault is an exceptional passer, teammate and goal scorer.

Red Lion U13 Boys

Joseph Brosnan: A powerful hitter of the ball with good distribution skills.

Mikey Denny: A threat in the attacking ‘D’ anytime he finds the ball.

Past High A3 Men Hawks

Alex Maddison: A fast paced, young and enthusiastic midfielder with great stick skills.

Gregg Dean: A composed, slick and patient player that outlets well from the back.

Past High A3 Men

Dylan Belanyi: An up and coming junior in the net, Belanyi has amazing reflexes and speed and has kept his team in many games.

Brenton Tummon: Works hard in attack and defence and has a great deal of experience in big games.

Norths A3 Women

Kellie Alexander: Very strong at the back, if Alexander is at her best there is a good chance she will be player of the match.

Racheal Williams: A powerful short corner threat who can control the middle of the park.

Past High A3 Women Hawks

Meg Roper: A pacy midfielder and striker. Roper has a great shot and uses her deft skills to great effect in attack and defence.

Beth Lawrence: Returning to hockey this year with great passion and enthusiasm, Lawrence has proved that she is not only an incisive striker, scoring six goals in four matches, but is also a game changing midfielder.
