Australian superstar Nick Kyrgios has added the Adelaide International to his summer schedule to aid his quest for a breakthrough grand slam win at the Australian Open.
Kyrgios, Australia’s highest-ranked male player, is already locked in to play in the inaugural United Cup in Sydney, where he’s set to clash with reigning Australian Open champion Rafael Nadal.
Now, the world No.22 is headed to Adelaide the first time where he’ll confront the likes of world No.8 Andrey Rublev and Italian star Lorenzo Musetti.
Kyrgios’ grand slam-winning doubles partner, South Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis, stormed to victory in last year’s event and will also be back to defend his crown.
“I have heard good things about the tournament and the upgraded venue at The Drive,” Kyrgios said.
“I am looking forward to playing in Adelaide. My good friend Thanasi had a great run last year in front of his home crowd and I hope I can enjoy the same success and support in January.”
Sixteen of the world’s top 20 will line up for the women’s event in Adelaide, including Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina and defending Adelaide International champion and world No.11 Madison Keys.
Confirmation of Kyrgios attendance comes after he declared he received “no respect” from Australian tennis officials after missing out on the Newcombe Medal won by three-time grand slam champion Ash Barty earlier this week.
Kyrgios won four titles in 2022 and 61 matches, including his epic run to the Wimbledon final, and defeated world No. Daniil Medvedev at the US Open.
“LOL. No respect at all. I don’t give a f**k,” Kyrgios wrote on Instagram on Tuesday, hours after Barty received her award on Monday night.
Despite his performances, Kyrgios also refused to play for the Australian Davis Cup team – despite approaches from captain Lleyton Hewitt – that went all the way to the final last month before losing to Canada without him.
