Despite a breakthrough 2022 season in which he made the Wimbledon final and defeated world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev at the US Open – Kyrgios was unable to unseat Barty for the award which recognises the most outstanding player and ambassador in Aussie tennis.

The Aussie firebrand lashed out at the decision in a fiery Instagram story on Tuesday, hours after Barty received her award on Monday night.

“LOL. No respect at all. I don’t give a f**k,” Kyrgios wrote.

Kyrgios wrote his message alongside a graphic which showed he won four titles to Barty’s three and 61 matches to Barty’s 14 in 2022.

The world No. 22 also claimed an Australian Open doubles win with Thanasi Kokkinakis to kick off the year.

In fairness to Barty, her retirement in March meant she was little hope of competing with Kyrgios when it came to overall season statistics.

But while his 2022 success didn’t translate to recognition at the Australian Tennis Awards night, Kyrgios did recently explain that 2022 was the year he started to feel respected by the Aussie sporting public.

“I feel like this is the first year I’ve earned respect when it should have been given when I first came on tour,” Kyrgios said.

“I’ve represented them, put them on the map, and having produced one of the most successful male years in the last decade for Australia, and am only just getting embraced (now), I don’t think that’s my fault.”

However he also explained his no-show for Australia’s Davis Cup team this year by blaming the Australian public.

“Maybe if Australia embraced me a little bit more, I would play it and bring home the (Davis Cup) trophy,” he told AAP.

“But who knows?

“It’s not always easy for me to erase everything in Australia that’s said negatively about me or my family.

“You don’t need that – so it’s interesting that they really want me to play, but are always criticising.”

Kyrgios is a lightning rod for criticism, often arguing with umpires during matches, abusing his own box, having previously been accused of tanking and being one of the most outspoken members of the tour.

He has also underperformed in the past despite possessing one of the more complete games in world tennis, frustrating fans who want to see him realise his incredible potential.

After a decade on the tour, Kyrgios said he’s not in the sport for the week to week grind, preferring to spend time with his girlfriend and family.

However, he also didn’t slam the door shut on the Davis Cup, saying he may have reconsidered if the tournament was in Australia.
